The Musée d’Orsay unveils an exhibition that delves into a poignant chapter of Vincent van Gogh’s life. This exhibition marks the first-ever dedicated showcase to the artworks crafted by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) during the last two months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. It stands as a culmination of years of research, finally offering the public a chance to appreciate this crucial phase of the artist’s journey in its full grandeur.

Arriving in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 20, 1890, Vincent van Gogh tragically passed away on July 29 following a suicide attempt. Despite spending just over two months in Auvers, this period witnessed a remarkable artistic renaissance. It was characterized by a unique style and creative evolution, shaped by the psychological tension arising from his new circumstances and the creation of some of his most profound masterpieces.

A New Beginning Amidst Turmoil

After enduring numerous crises in Arles and Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh sought a fresh creative start closer to Paris and his brother Theo. The choice of Auvers was influenced by the presence of Dr. Gachet, a physician specialized in melancholia treatment, a friend of the Impressionists, an art collector, and an amateur painter. Van Gogh settled at the heart of the village, in the Ravoux inn, exploring every facet of the new world unfolding before him. Simultaneously, he grappled with multifaceted concerns, including his mental health, his relationship with his brother, and his position in the art world.

A Unique Artistic Flourish

Until now, no exhibition has exclusively focused on this pivotal phase of his career. In a mere two months, the artist produced 74 paintings and 33 drawings, including iconic works such as “Dr. Paul Gachet,” “The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise,” and “Wheatfield with Crows.” Featuring approximately 40 paintings and 20 drawings, the exhibition will shed light on this period thematically: from his early landscapes depicting the village, portraits, still life, to countryside landscapes. It will also unveil a unique series within Van Gogh’s oeuvre, showcasing elongated double square format paintings.

A Collaborative Tribute

This remarkable exhibition is jointly organized by the Public Establishment of Museums of Orsay and Orangerie in Paris and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It will be presented in Amsterdam from May 12 to September 3, 2023, marking the 50th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum.
